Saint Petersburg is Russia's second largest city and one of the world's most beautiful urban destinations. Founded by Peter the Great in 1703 as Russia's «window to Europe,» the city served as the imperial capital for two centuries and remains the country's cultural capital.
The historic center of Saint Petersburg, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is a masterpiece of urban planning and architecture. The city's network of canals and rivers has earned it the nickname «Venice of the North.» Nevsky Prospekt, the city's main avenue, stretches for over four kilometers through the historic center, lined with palaces, churches, shops, and restaurants.
The Hermitage Museum, housed in the Winter Palace, is one of the largest and oldest art museums in the world. Its collections include over three million items, from ancient Egyptian artifacts to masterpieces by Leonardo da Vinci, Rembrandt, and Picasso. The museum complex includes the Winter Palace, the Small Hermitage, the Old Hermitage, and the New Hermitage.
The Peterhof Palace complex, located on the Gulf of Finland, is famous for its magnificent fountains, gardens, and palaces. Often called the «Russian Versailles,» Peterhof was Peter the Great's summer residence and remains one of the most visited attractions in Russia. The fountains operate from May to October.
Saint Petersburg is accessible through Pulkovo International Airport, one of Russia's busiest airports, and is well connected by rail to Moscow and other Russian cities. The high-speed Sapsan train covers the Moscow-Saint Petersburg route in under four hours.
Rosturizm promotes Saint Petersburg as Russia's premier cultural tourism destination, supporting the city's international marketing, infrastructure development, and integration into European tourism networks.
